I have been thinking about the term “Lord”.
Over and over again in the old testament we hear of someone calling someone else “lord”. Sometimes it is someone who they do not even know. My favorite is when Sarah called her husband Abraham “lord”. What strikes me is that none of these people were calling the person perfect, or sinless, or all knowing. None of these people were worshiping the person that they were calling “lord”. What they all were doing though was choosing to put that person’s will and wants above their own. They were offering to serve. They were offering to submit their own will and wants and choosing to put the other person’s will and wants above their own. Imagine that couple is going out to eat and one of them asks the other where they want to go and the other person responds with “wherever you would like is fine by me”. That same conversation may have included “wherever you like lord” in years past because that person is choosing the other person’s will and wants to take a higher position than their own.
Now jump to us calling Jesus our Lord. If we truly can call Him Lord Jesus, then we are choosing to let go of the steering wheel of life and let Jesus take us wherever He desires! We are choosing to relax and TRUST that wherever Jesus takes us is OK with us. We are choosing to let Him change the course of our future and deviate away from our chosen destination/career/retirement/hobby/even friends.
If we call Jesus Lord, we need to walk it out. One of the 10 commandments cautions us not to take the name of the Lord God in vain! We need to be careful not to be like the owner of “Honest Johns Stolen Car Parts”. John may sell stolen car parts, but even if he admits to it, that doesn’t make him “Honest”, instead, he is taking the name “honest” IN VAIN (for his own glory). So if we call Him Lord Jesus, let’s do our very best to choose to allow Him to drive, Him to steer, Him to guide us through each and every day!
Remember, we are all in this together!
